Yesterday, we took a day trip to Napa, California, which has the most incredible array of historical homes. We can’t start to start sprinkling some in as we do the research.
This 1900-built house belonged to George H. Francis (1877-1963), a graduate of Stanford University and the third publisher of the Napa Valley Register.
His father, the George M. Francis, had purchased the Register in 1870. George H. returned to assist his father in the operation of the paper, and upon the death of the elder Francis, became the paper’s publisher in 1932. He retired as publisher in 1945, but upon the death of his first wife the former Madge Poffenburger, he again became publisher in 1954.
In 1949 he and his first wife celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. After her death, he was married to Elizabeth Amstutz.
