Built in 1893 in Alameda, California, this double house cost $4,000 to erect. Its original owner was Ruth E. Colby, whose husband, Hubbard, died the same year the house was built.

The couple had two children: W.H. Colby and W.F. Ardis, who lived in Portland, Ore., and White Plains, NY at the time of her 1918 death.
