Charles Thomas House

Happy Won’t Look Wednesday from Woodland, California.

This Italianate was built around 1876 for Charles Frederick Thomas. C.F. Thomas’ father, Charles S. Thomas, was an early grain broker in the town who previously owned a general store and grain elevator in Knights Landing before moving here in 1872.

The elder Thomas, who built many early commercial buildings in Woodland, owned the original mansion to the north of this house, which is now gone. This house boasts many of the same bracketed Italianate details as the mansion.

His son was also in the grain business, later becoming a partner in Thomas, Stephens and Mattei.
