Historic Firehouse No. 1

I mean, come ON. Just when I thought the other fire house was the cutest thing ever (see yesterday’s post), I walked down to this magnificent specimen.

The signage outside reads as follows:

“The Auburn Hose Co. No. 1 (was) nicknamed the “Rattlers.” Following the establishment of the rattlers by several years, this first permanent home for No. 1 was established Feb. 11, 1891. From early day bucket brigades to today’s modern firefighters, the faithfulness and devotion of our volunteer(s) has proven to be the prevailing factor.

An all-volunteer firefighting organization for a city the size of Auburn is unique, yet the citizens of our city currently enjoy one of the best fire insurance rates.”

It was moved to its current location in 1973, and community volunteers spent more than 8 years restoring this building.
