Author’s Ridge

Sleepy Hollow Cemetery is a massive graveyard in Concord, Mass. But find your way to one quiet corner, and you’ll discover Author’s Ridge, the final resting place of some of Concord’s famous authors.

Buried here are Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882), Louisa May Alcott (1832-1888) and her family, Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864) and Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862) — all within steps of each other.

Literature lovers often leave pens, pencils, notes and other items at the graves of these famed writers. The whole town, in fact, is filled with houses and places associated with these classic authors.
