Established in 1729, the Old Burying Ground in Bedford, Mass., was the town’s only graveyard until 1849. The cemetery includes many veterans.

Slate headstones were popular during that time period, although because they lack proper foundation, they tip and break easily. Some could even deteriorate,. Granite and marble headstones became more popular choices as time went on.
But the headstones in this cemetery have been lovingly cared for by the town, including a restoration project in the 2000s.

We found this monument for Black enslaved soldiers toward the back of the cemetery. We appreciate your service, even though our country treated you horribly.
