Beacon Street Tomb

Built around 1858, the Beacon Street Tomb is located in the gorgeous Lakeside Cemetery in Wakefield, Mass.

A historic receiving tomb built of ashlar granite, the building was used to store caskets during the brutal New England winter months, when frozen ground made burial impossible.

The tomb, which faces away from the cemetery on Beacon Street, served this purpose until the 20th century. In 1989, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

The Lakeside Cemetery overlooks Lake Quannapowitt.
