The American Revolutionary War began here in Lexington Common (also called the Battle Green) on April 19, 1775. This marker commemorates the event with a quote from Captain John Parker of the Massachusetts Militia: “Stand your ground. Don’t fire unless fired upon. But if they mean to have a war, let it begin here.”

Each year on Patriot Day, reenactments are staged at the Common, along with a variety of historical educational events. The Boston Marathon also takes place on Patriot Day.
