Sylvia Beach Hotel

An old oceanfront hotel for book lovers — what could be better?

The Sylvia Beach Hotel is a 21-guest room hotel with rooms furnished and named after famous authors including Agatha Christie, J.K. Rowling, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Shakespeare, Amy Tan and more. Its oceanfront library ascends into the attic, and meals are served family style in the “Tables of Content” restaurant.

Built between 1910 and 1913 on Nye Beach, it was originally named the New Cliff House, later becoming Hotel Gilmore. For several years early on, the getaway was known at the honeymoon capitol of Oregon.

Recently placed on the National Register of Historic Places, it was renamed the Sylvia Beach Hotel by owners Sally Ford and Goody Coble. It’s a tribute to Sylvia Beach, owner of Shakespeare & Co Bookstore in Paris during the 1920s and 1930s, and one of the century’s greatest patrons of literature.

We stayed there 20 years ago, and it was the most fun, peaceful and relaxing place to stay! Dogs aren’t allowed but there is a hotel cat there if you’re jonesing for some furry love.
